The founder of Cancer Health Foundation (CHF) is a professional nurse (retired) who cared for cancer patients for eighteen years at the Oncology center, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) Kumasi, Ghana and who incidentally lost both parents through cancer. The founder was moved by the rapid increase in cancer cases in Ghana. It was realized that seventy (70%) of cancer cases diagnosed in Ghana are women who sadly report to the health facilities with the disease in the advanced stages for which the best treatment option is palliative care.
Again, it is seen that the delay in reporting is due to factors such as superstition, poverty, ignorance about risk factors and signs and symptoms of the disease, inadequate screening centres, delayed referrals, etc. In the light of these, the founder developed a deep passion for women affected with the disease as well as those in the society.
With her oncology nursing experience, especially in palliative care. She started one-on-one counselling of clients and followed up with visits to their homes to counsel them and encourage relatives to give support and care to their terminally ill ones.
Our mission is to promote cancer health in the society through education on prevention, screening for early detection, counselling and supportive care for women and families affected with breast and cervical cancers, training of volunteers to screen breast cancers, advocacy for women affected with breast and cervical cancers and collaboration with other organisations in the fight against cancer.
CHF is a non-governmental organization with the vision of empowering the society on cancer awareness and control.
